Mayor of Ottawa Declares April 8 “GOHBA Day”

Ottawa, ON – April 08, 2026 – The Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association (GOHBA) is honoured to have April 8 proclaimed “GOHBA Day” by Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, recognizing 75 years of contributions to housing and community building in the nation’s capital.

The proclamation was delivered during GOHBA’s Annual General Meeting, highlighting the organization’s longstanding role in supporting industry collaboration, advocating for practical housing solutions and helping shape Ottawa’s evolving neighbourhoods.

“This recognition from the Mayor and the City is a meaningful honour for our members and the broader housing community,” said Jason Burggraaf, Executive Director of GOHBA. “GOHBA Day is an opportunity to reflect on the dedication of builders, renovators, trades and partners who have helped shape Ottawa over generations. It also reinforces the importance of continuing to work together to deliver the homes our growing city needs.”

GOHBA Day 2 Medium

Founded in 1951, GOHBA has served as the trusted voice of builders, developers, renovators and industry partners across the region. Through advocacy, education, signature events and collaboration, the association has helped strengthen professional standards, support business growth and contribute to the development of vibrant communities.

GOHBA has worked alongside industry leaders, governments and community partners to strengthen Ottawa’s homebuilding sector. Through advocacy, education, signature events and collaboration, GOHBA has:

  • Established professional standards and a strong Code of Ethics
  • Supported business growth across generations of builders
  • Contributed to the development of vibrant communities across the region
  • Connected industry voices with decision-makers to advance practical housing policy

2026 and Beyond

In 2026, GOHBA emphasizes the importance of maintaining momentum following recent progress on housing policy, including the outcomes of the Housing Innovation Task Force and updates to the City’s Zoning By-law. These efforts represent important steps toward faster approvals, fewer unnecessary barriers and a wider range of housing options across the city.

Looking ahead, GOHBA continues to advocate for measures that will turn policy direction into homes on the ground, including:

  • More efficient and predictable development approvals
  • Policies that help reduce costs impacting housing affordability
  • Planning frameworks that support diverse housing forms in both established neighbourhoods and growth areas

A Legacy of Leadership

1951 – The Foundation Years
GOHBA began as the Greater Ottawa House Builders Association, supporting a growing post-war builders’ community and creating a unified voice for Ottawa’s homebuilders at a time when a new home cost approximately $4,000 and the city’s population was roughly 200,000.

1970s – 1990s – Expansion & Professionalization
As Ottawa grew, so did the Association. GOHBA established standards, strengthened industry collaboration and launched signature programs and awards that continue today.

2000s – 2010s – Innovation & Advocacy
Responding to evolving markets, technology and regulation, GOHBA deepened its advocacy efforts, strengthened education initiatives and expanded major industry events.

2020s – Leadership for the Future
Today, GOHBA continues to advance housing solutions for a growing Ottawa by bringing together members, partners and stakeholders to shape the future of housing in the region.
