What is the RenoTour Parade of Homes?

The RenoTour Parade of Homes (self-guided tour) is an exciting event that offers you the opportunity to tour a curated selection of exceptional home renovation projects and custom-built residences. Organized by the Greater Ottawa Home Builders' Association (GOHBA), this annual showcase celebrates the talent and craftsmanship of Ottawa's top renovators and custom home builders.

During the RenoTour, participants can explore a diverse range of homes that have undergone remarkable transformations. From stunning kitchen and bathroom remodels to whole-home renovations and additions, each project showcases the latest design trends, innovative materials, and cutting-edge construction techniques. Additionally, the tour features newly constructed custom homes, allowing visitors to appreciate the meticulous attention to detail and unique architectural styles employed by Ottawa's finest builders.

This renovation is a total reinvention of a classic war-time house. By bringing in more light, optimizing the layout and embracing bold, contemporary design, a long-overlooked structure has been transformed inside and out into a stylish, future-ready gem with spaces thoughtfully reimagined to better suit the homeowners’ lifestyle and make the most of a narrow footprint.

Among the changes, the 17-foot-wide layout was reworked to create open-concept sightlines, a powder room, ensuite and laundry were added (upgrading the home from one to three bathrooms), upstairs bedrooms were reduced from three to two to create space for a walk-in closet, the ensuite and the laundry, and a mudroom-style back entry was created within a compact addition to add everyday function without exceeding
footprint constraints.

This project is a great example of how older homes have tremendous potential and can be reimagined for modern needs.

An outdated 20-year-old kitchen was transformed
into a luxurious, functional and expansive space.
Widening the galley kitchen's opening to the front
of the home created a better connection to the
refreshed entryway. While a full open concept
possible due to a load-bearing wall, larger doorways
were achieved by reconfiguring building systems within
an angled wall, making for a more welcoming kitchen entrance.

The opening at the back of the house was expanded,
allowing for a large peninsula that seats four, removing
the need for a dining table, which also allowed for full height
pantry cabinetry and a built-in storage bench under the window.
Custom white oak veneer open shelving, herringbone backsplash
tiles, champagne bronze fixtures and a white silgranit (a granite
composite) sink replaced dated features.

Hardwood flooring unified the main floor. The living room
fireplace was modernized, and a custom bar was added to the
living room for entertaining. Each element works together to
bring this from a lacklustre main floor to a modern, functional
space to please the homeowners for years to come.

Developed by Goodstory in partnership with Taska Construction, Rosaline Hill Architecture, and Nathan Kyle Studio, this property is designed to accommodate a multi-generational family while offering a fresh perspective on urban living.

Nestled close to the lively Main Street and the peaceful Rideau River, the project strikes a perfect balance between urban energy and natural tranquility. With grandparents occupying one of the top units and their children and grandchildren in another, the design creates a unique balance of closeness and independence. Each unit also features a rentable basement apartment—a thoughtful feature that helps ease the financial strain for new homeowners, generating income that can offset mortgage costs.

The journey to completion wasn’t without its challenges, from unexpected budget changes to City delays that threatened the timeline. The team’s resilience paid off, and the project is set for completion in September 2024. Initially envisioned with a Maibec wood facade and black brick, the decision to use corrugated black metal with red brick—championed by Nathan Kyle—proved to be a winning choice, garnering appreciation from many for its bold, modern aesthetic.

This new addition to Old Ottawa East offers a compelling vision of flexible, sustainable family living—blending architectural innovation with practical solutions. Keep an eye out for this intriguing development; it may just change how we think about ‘home’.
