Navigating the permit maze

If you have never experienced the world of Renovation, you might be overwhelmed by the permit process. Most people are. It can be a complicated and confusing maze, and it can take a good chunk of your time.

As a homeowner, the responsibility of getting the correct permits falls on you. But many professional renovators will look after them on your behalf. That in itself can be a huge weight off your shoulders.

You might need a permit for a variety of undertakings – for instance, a new sun room, or a new garage (attached or not), a porch; a deck; a substantial basement alteration.

You have to have permits in place before any renovation can begin. The fines for not having them are enough to stop you in your tracks. They can be up to $50,000 for a first offence. (If you don’t learn your lesson from that and do it again, you don’t even want to know how much it can cost. It’s jaw-dropping.)

It’s daunting, this permit business. How do you know which ones you need? Where do you go to get them? What paperwork do you need? How long to they take to get?

It’s probably the first reason to hire a reputable renovator, such as any in this list of RenoMark® professionals, who will assess your plans, tell you what permits you need, and either get them for you or explain what you should do to get them yourself.

Renovating is never easy. But there’s the really hard way to do it, and there’s the least-complicated way. Seems like a no-brainer.

Minimalize stress. Talk to your renovator.
