How long does it last?

Let’s say you’ve just survived a major renovation. You love it and you’re glad that you did it.

But there’s a little voice in the back of your head that says: “When do we have to do this again?”

The little voice might well answer: “Never!”

But a bigger voice, the voice of practicality, might nudge you further for a more reasoned answer.

“Assuming we stay in this home,” it might ask, “will it be five years? 10? 20?”

Well, it depends. If you have done the renovation yourself, or if it has been done by someone without a good deal of experience, another renovation could well be in the more immediate future. This is especially true if your family is hard on a home, if the design does not suit your lifestyle and if the materials are not top-of-the-line.

On the other hand, if you have hired a professional renovator with solid experience and a history of success, chances are you could be looking much further into the future before renovating again.

It’s a good question for your renovator, who will have a finger on the quality and longevity of the work, on renovation trends, and even on the ways that renovation can boost the value of your home.

There are certain renovations you might want to do sooner than others. Depending on your household (age of children, number of pets), some rooms can take a beating. Bathrooms and kitchens can become “outmoded” by new trends in fixtures, design, colour, accessibility ‒ even technology. Although each room might still be in decent shape, you might find they are outdated after 10 years or so and you want to freshen things up.

Of course, if you’re just recovering from a huge renovation and can’t even think of these things yet, rest assured that if you have used a professional, and if that professional has used the best available products, it’s time to relax and enjoy… for many years yet to come.
